The Language

If you are looking at property in Wales then you'll notice that Welsh is a living language, making it a thriving part of welsh people's everyday life. You will hear and see much evidence of Welsh as a living language particularly in daily conversation, place names and directional signs. All Welsh speakers are, of course bilingual and will give you a warm welcome or "croeso".

Welsh is one of the oldest surviving languages in Europe and has its roots in ancient Celtic language spoken throughout Briton prior to the Saxon invasion. As such, it bears similarities to its "sister" Celtic languages and is close "cousin" of Gaelic, Breton and Cornish.

Welsh has survived marvellously and, today, you can see and hear it flourishing in books, newspapers and magazines.

There are two Welsh language radio stations Radio Cymru (92 - 96FM) and Champion (103FM) and a Welsh language TV station in S4C. Today school children are taught bilingually and local and national Government provide active support for the language. The language is also part of a rich and thriving welsh culture and heritage - more information can be found from the Welsh tourist board and local authority.

You may wish to learn a little more through buying a phrasebook or just listening. Learning a few of the most basic phrases such as "Bore da" (Good Morning) and "Diolch" (Thank You) can spark interesting conversations.
